Monroeville Volunteer Fire Company #5

Welcome to the official site of the Monroeville Volunteer Fire Company #5. We are a 100% volunteer Fire and EMS company located in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, which is just East of the City of Pittsburgh. In 2005, we celebrated 50 years service to our community. The Monroeville Fire Departments consist of 5 independent fire companies who share a common name and a common goal. Here at Station 5, we offer a live-in program, continuing EMS education, CPR classes, fire training and a great learning experience if you are interested in a fire or EMS career. Our site is updated regularly, so check back often for the everyday happenings of the 5th District.

DRILL WITH #6

Monday, April 29, 2013   Tonight we got the chance to drill with #6.  Members practiced relay pumping between Engines and into the Ladder Truck.  Both Junior and Senior members got to train on hydrant operations as well as basic ladder and hand line skills. RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE FIRE

Tuesday, April 9, 2013  Companies 6,5,1, Command 32 and Rescue 4 for RIT was alerted this evening to the above address for a report of smoke in a residence. While enroute, Company 6 units arrived onscene reporting heavy smoke showing. C-60 established command and requested Truck 5 to pull up in between Engine 61 and Engine 62 on the Alpha side. Truck 5 crew was immediately ordered to the Charlie side to cut open the garage door and throw ground ladders. Rescue 4 crew arrived and provided RIT. While the garage door was opened, Engine 61, Engine 62, and Quint 1 crews placed multiple hand lines in service and performed fire supression, search, and rescue operations.

Once the garage door was opened, command ordered Truck 5 crew to open the roof for ventilation. The roof crew cut 2-4'x8' ventilation holes on the roof, then worked on salvage and overhaul operation in the structure. Crews were out about 2 hours.

YET ANOTHER ACCOMPLISHMENT BY OUR EMS CREWS

Sunday, March 31, 2013  A few weeks ago, Co. 5 was called to Penn Hills for an EMS assist due to their units being unavailable. Now normally we don't post about our EMS runs on the website, but this was a special case and no patient information will be posted.

Our EMS crew arrived to find a patient with substantial chest pains and initiated treatment quickly (IV, Oxygen, a 12-Lead EKG with transmssion to the hospital, and medications). They then loaded and went to Forbes Regional who is a certified Cardiac Care Center. They initiated treatment and got our patient up to the cath lab and catheterized in under 70 minutes (the national standard being 90 minutes).

The time we enter the ER to the time a catheter is introduced ("Door to Baloon Time") and the clot or blockage cleared should be under 90 minutes There is an adage that "time is muscle", meaning that delays in treating a myocardial infarction (heart attack) increases the likelihood and amount of cardiac muscle damage.

This is yet another example of what we do here at #5. This patient is home and was very appreciative of our care. His hospital stay was very minimal and he had almost no heart damage because of this quick care.

The pictures below show what the heart looked like before and after the catheterization. You can see the blood flow (darkened veiny areas) after the catheter is introduced. Great job folks!!!!
