Welcome to the official site of the Monroeville Volunteer Fire Company #5. We are a 100% volunteer Fire and EMS company located in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, which is just East of the City of Pittsburgh. In 2005, we celebrated 50 years service to our community. The Monroeville Fire Departments consist of 5 independent fire companies who share a common name and a common goal. Here at Station 5, we offer a live-in program, continuing EMS education, CPR classes, fire training and a great learning experience if you are interested in a fire or EMS career. Our site is updated regularly, so check back often for the everyday happenings of the 5th District.

SMOKE IN AREA CALL FINDS HOUSE FIRE
Friday, June 19, 2009
-
Company 5 was alerted (single company response) for a report of smoke in the area of Old Haymaker Rd.  C52 and E51 arrived and found heavy smoke in the area and then discovered the home in the 4500 Blk of Old William Penn Hwy with fire and smoke showing.  C52 then requested a full assignment (bringing Companies 4 and 6).  Truck 5 arrived and positioned on Old Wm Penn in front of E51 which made it's connection to a hydrant across the street from the home.  Crews from E51 had to force the front door and interior items that were blocking the door.  C50 ordered the first in crews to check the home for occupants, later finding out the home had been abandoned for some time.  While entering the structure. A second crew from Company 6 went to the second floor to search, and a third team entered through the garage area where they found heavy fire in a back basement room (initially not seen from initial size-up). Rescue 1 was later called for air.  Crews made a quick knock of the fire, preserved the scene until the Alleg. County Fire Marshal and Monroeville Detectives arrived to investigate and returned into service. Crews were out approx. 3 hours.

Firefighter "Rocky" Rzodkiewicz was injured attempting to step over heavy debris just inside the front door and was transported to our local hospital for treatment and evaluation. He's is doing fine with a minor knee injury.

COMMAND: Chief Harvey (C-50)
UNITS RESPONDING: E-51, Truck 5, Tanker 5, E-42, Truck 4, Engine 61, Amb. 6-9. Amb. 4-9, Rescue 1

FLOODING & HIGH WATER DANGERS!!!

Thursday, June 18, 2009
-
Tonight the Monroeville Fire Dept as a whole responded to MANY calls for people and vehicles stranded in high water. This proves to be a VERY stressful and VERY DANGEROUS call to respond to for several reasons to emergency workers.

One of the dangers is the heavy rushing water we must walk through to see if anyone is in the vehicle(s) left in high water areas. Even 1 foot of rushing water can sweep a person off his/her feet.

Another reason is that we don't know, if under that water, there are manholes missing, or what other hazards might be under the water (electrical lines, debris, etc.)

We encounter enough hazards during "storm time" that adding vehicles stuck in high water isn't helping us at all. SO, PLEASE DO NOT attempt to drive through water across roadways, walk across roadways flooded, or help others that may have attempted to do the same. Keep yourself safe and use common sense.

We have possibly 1 or 2 days left of rain here in the area, so PLEASE, be careful.

VEHICLE CRASH
Thursday, June 18, 2009
-
After all the storms subsided and things were slowly returning back to normal, we were alerted for a single vehicle crash with injuries. Initially police thought the vehicle ran off Rt. 22 down over the hill comming to rest in the rear of a local furniture store, but later was advised she crashed on Old William Penn Hwy and drove to the back of the store to hide.

Engine 51 performed a simple "door pop" to access the passenger side of the vehicle while Medic 58 initiated care of a female injured inside. The patient was taken to a city trauma center for care.

COMMAND: Chief 50 (Harvey)
UNITS RESPONDING: Medic 58, Engine 51

MONROEVILLE HIT HARD BY STORMS
Thursday, June 18, 2009
-
As always, when it rains, it pours here in Monroeville. Today was no different. When a heavy storm cell crossed through town, with tornado warnings, high wind advisories, and hail possible, we strapped in and handled things as we only know how, by force.

Between 1930 hrs and 0130 hrs, Company 5 handled approx. 12 calls ranging from flooded basements, vehicles stuck in high water, elevator rescues to a vehicle over the hillside (story above). We manned the station with about 15 people during that time. We usually aren't the hardest hit by these type of storms, Company 3 and 4 usually get hit hardest, but all companies got their share this time. Many calls simply weren't even logged due to the high volume of calls and when crews arrived on scene, they were often greeted with several residents requesting assistance at one time.

All 5 companies, as usual did an outstanding job and should be commended on their staffing and responses. As you can see, the guys even broke out the PFD's (just in case). Good job guys!

MVFD#5 WISHES A SPEEDY RECOVERY!!!!
Monday, June 1, 2009
-
So, those in Monroeville know, our friend and brother Jim Edgar is overseas serving our Country. For those that don't....there ya go. (Might want to keep up with the times more though.....anyhow).

This week we found out Jimmy was hurt in an accident with his group involving a roll over of his Stryker vehicle. (THANK GOD it wasn't from being attacked or during combat). Unfortunately Jim was injured in the crash and sustained some pretty bad injuries.

According to Jimmy's wife, he is doing well and has decided to try and finish his tour "man style" and not fly to Germany to the hospital there which would have apparently extended his potential return home time.

We, here at #5 have always been praying for his safe return and still do. We also keep VERY on top of what he's up to through both him and his wife. We know Jimmy visits this site pretty regularly and all the guys here would just like to ALL say...

GET WELL BROTHER AND STAY SAFE, KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN AND YOUR SPIRITS HIGH!!!

We will be waiting here for your speedy return.
